Ship arborist corpus state to new peers and DVD-R archival via
point-in-time tar.zst packs. One artifact serves both channels —
bucket+CDN delivery and physical-media archival.
Bucket holds packs only. Pack key = hash_leaf(manifest_bytes), so same
chunk set on two writers produces the same pack_hash and upload is
idempotent. Each pack pins the corpus snapshot_root it covers in audit
+ result body — packs are delayed snapshots, not live mirrors;
falsifications between repacks produce new pack_hashes.
stream_packs runs streaming zstd over tarfile, peeking compressed-buffer
size after each chunk via FLUSH_BLOCK (preserves dictionary). Default
cap 4_400_000_000 — 4.4 GB DVD-R safe-fit, ~6.5% buffer below the
4.7 GB marketing capacity to absorb ISO9660 overhead, growisofs
lead-in/lead-out, media variance, and drive-edge refusal. Each disc
fills to ~4.4 GB recorded data, not the ~1.5 GB an uncompressed cap
produced.
One backend class (S3CompatibleBackend via boto3 + endpoint_url) covers
AWS S3, DO Spaces, R2, B2, GCS S3-interop, MinIO. Optional dep
[object-store] = boto3>=1.34; dev extras pull moto for the wire test.
Voyeur: credentials via AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID/_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY env or
~/.aws/credentials, never printed; only endpoint URL + bucket name
surface in logs.
CLI: arborist cold {pack,unpack,stats}. Makefile: cold-pack,
cold-pack-dvd (local-dir output for growisofs), cold-unpack, cold-stats.
Sizing for current shards (14.1M chunks, ~17 GB compressed): ~4 packs
at the default cap, ~\$0.34/mo DO Spaces storage, ~\$0.0001/fresh-peer
hydrate.
Always-on raw-UTF-8 leaf store (per ticket "Hard invariants") deferred
— packs-only for now, backfill later.

Three workstreams, full suite 2482 passed, experimental paths default-OFF.
#000055 — Windows quickstart without make
tasks.py (pure-stdlib runner) + make.bat shim + .gitattributes;
README Windows section rewritten. Quickstart needs only Python
3.10+ (no make/bzip2/curl/bash). Mirrors the Makefile quickstart
subset; drift-pinned by tests/test_tasks_runner.py.
#000001 §7 Phase 0 — deterministic cross-language guard
arborist/qa/crosslang.py: non-English signal (¿/¡/non-ASCII) + an
es function-word stoppack. Fail-closed to UNGROUNDED before
retrieval/LLM (mirrors the quantifier reject-DAG) when no content
token survives, else strips es stopwords from the retrieval query
only. English path byte-identical by construction. Default OFF
(crosslang_guard_enabled). Measured: the anarcocapitalismo field
case 10.4s -> 1.6s.
#000056 — Operation Sandwich (cross-language grounding)
arborist/qa/mt/: opus-mt es/fr/ru<->en, lazy per-pair memoised
singleton (fixes the 88%-engine-error concurrency defect),
manifest-pinned, [mt] extra; entity_mask wrapper. Sandwich =
translate query in (retrieval + LLM prompt) -> English answer ->
UNTOUCHED verifier grounds English-vs-English -> translate the
verified answer out as display-only (banner-labelled, zero
grounding). question_hash + verifier_policy_hash invariant; MT
engine identity binds into RetrievalPlan, not governance. CLI
--crosslang-translate / make XLANG_MT=1. Default OFF; entity_mask
default OFF (measured net-negative at bench scale). Fan-out bench
(bench/*.py): Spanish ~0% -> 71% grounded vs the real no-support
baseline; the round-trip predictor was tried and refuted; the
entity-mask lever failed at scale (corpus-title anchoring untried).
CLAUDE.md: cross-language bright-line convention + module map.
Pre-existing modified diagram files are intentionally excluded.
Speedup (§3 plan): ShadowNLI._nli_batch batches forwards
(ARBORIST_NLI_BATCH=64); device auto-detect (ARBORIST_NLI_DEVICE, else
cuda-if-available); auto-prefer an ONNX export — bench/scripts/export_nli_onnx.py
/ make export-nli-onnx exports + int8-dynamic-quantizes the pinned
checkpoint into ~/.arborist/models/nli/<ver>/onnx/ (operator state, NOT
committed), _ensure_loaded loads model_quantized.onnx via
optimum.onnxruntime (backend onnx-int8), falls back to torch silently.
torch-cpu-batch1 ~120ms/pair → onnx-int8-cpu-batched ~32ms/pair (~4x);
seconds on a 4090. optimum[onnxruntime] added to the [nli] extra; 24
tests.
Gate-item-4 verdict at proper n: ARBORIST_NLI_SHADOW=1 make bench-qa
BENCH_QA_N=1 → 223 cells (89 STRICT / 90 HYBRID / 44 UNGROUNDED; also
surfaced + fixed a lone-surrogate bug). Shadow sweep over those: NLI-as-
runtime-veto on STRICT has ~26% FP at θc 0.5, ~8% at θc 0.90, ~0% only
at θc 0.99 — and θc 0.99 gives up most recombination recall (hard
synthetic recombinations bottom out ~0.76). FAILS the §7 #12 gate on
this design. Only untried path that might pass: a Phase-3 runtime hook
running NLI on the verifier's actual matched clauses (1-3), not
top-6-by-overlap. Until then: runtime NLI demotion stays off; the 2
fixtures stay permanent boundary markers; θc stays 0.5. Production
verifier unchanged; falsification-hard stays 10/12.
arborist/qa/nli/ — SHADOW ONLY (never an audit_mode input; manifest not
yet in governance_policy_hash per §7 #2). manifest.json pins
cross-encoder/nli-MiniLM2-L6-H768 @ a fixed HF revision + the
bench-validated θc 0.5/θe 0.9 + 2 alternates + the Phase-3 TODO;
shadow.py = ShadowNLI/shadow_check (lazy transformers+torch behind a new
[nli] extra, clauses() segmenter, the §7 #5 clause-level Demote()
decision, degrades to available=False when [nli] absent);
bench/scripts/nli_shadow_sweep.py + make bootstrap-nli / bench-nli-shadow
(the gate-item-4 instrument); 16 tests.
First sweep (116 records — 5f-falsification packs + the arborist-nli-bench
eval sets): 28/28 synth recombination demoted, 0/26 FP on legit summaries,
0/9 fires on already-STRICT_SPAN records, 25/50 on UNGROUNDED (the
contradiction half; quiet on non-sequiturs). Gate items 1/2/3/5/6 clear
on available data; item 4 — shadow FP rate on a real live-bench-qa
sample — remains the open measurement. Production verifier unchanged;
falsification-hard stays 10/12.
Implements the optional vec backend from the #000039 doc, with the
"obvious" v1 tuning, and demonstrates it on a real corpus shard.
arborist/search/vec.py (new):
- VecBackend(SearchBackend) — ANN over chunk_vecs, UNGROUNDED hits
(same as FTS5; vec changes recall, never warrant — embeddings are
soft signal, never in the proof path).
- chunk_vecs vec0 virtual table + vec_meta — sibling tables, additive,
don't touch chunks/documents/the audit chain.
- embed_documents() — batched ingest; delete-then-insert per chunk_id
(vec0 doesn't honor INSERT-OR-REPLACE — re-inserting an existing PK
is a hard UNIQUE error), so re-runs are idempotent and content-
changed → re-embed works. Skips cold-evicted chunks (content NULL).
- Pluggable Embedder callable; default = fastembed bge-small-en-v1.5
(~130 MB ONNX, downloads on first use). load_vec_extension(conn)
toggles enable_load_extension + sqlite_vec.load.
- v1 hyperparams (VEC_BACKEND_VERSION = vec-v1-bge-small-en-v1.5-
384float32-cosine-flat): model bge-small-en-v1.5, dim 384, quant
float32 (int8/binary = the production storage knob per §3.1, not
wired in v1), metric cosine (bge outputs L2-normalized, so cosine
ranking ≡ L2 ranking), ANN flat (vec0 default), top_k 20. These
five fold into governance_policy_hash in a later phase (§6).
CLI (arborist/cli.py):
- — populate chunk_vecs
for --db; prints progress + timing.
- — semantic ANN search (errors with
an install/embed hint if [vec] missing or chunk_vecs empty).
- Both surfaced only when sqlite_vec imports (mirrors the [html] /
selectolax pattern).
pyproject.toml: [vec] optional extra (sqlite-vec>=0.1.9, fastembed>=0.4);
added to [dev]. Note: sentence-transformers is the heavier "official"
embedder path §5 names; fastembed is the lightweight ONNX one.
tests/test_search_vec.py (7 tests, skip-if-no-[vec]): deterministic
stub embedder (hash → unit vector) so the suite exercises the
sqlite-vec plumbing — ext load, schema, ingest, KNN, JOIN, Hit shape,
limit, idempotent re-embed, --limit cap, empty/unpopulated — without
the heavy fastembed model. Semantic quality is demonstrated on a
shard, not unit-tested.
Demonstrated on ~/.arborist/shards/crawl_appliedcombinatorics_org.db:
168 chunks embedded in ~37 s (mostly model load); semantic queries
return topically-correct hits — "how many ways to choose k things
from n" → top hit "AC Combinations", "binomial coefficient counting"
→ "AC Introduction" (integer-solution counting) + "AC Combinatorial
Proofs". None of the query tokens need stem-match the chunk — the
semantic-allusion-gap closure the ticket promised. chain-check on
that shard reports 0 after embedding (chunk_vecs is a sibling table).
#000039 status flipped to "in progress · Phase 1 landed"; Phase 2
(RRF hybrid fusion in query.py) gated on a ≥5pp recall-lift
measurement with no STRICT-rate regression (§8).
(Unrelated: tests/test_weights.py::test_as_dict_returns_all_eleven_fields
fails in the working tree — that's a parallel-clone in-flight change
to arborist/substrate/weights.py + its test, not touched here.)
The earlier audit found one observation: pyproject.toml's `dev`
extras includes arborist[math] (sympy for ticket #000030's
SymPy substrate) but NOT arborist[hessian] (numpy + scipy for
#000034's φ_linear alignment probe).
Without this, fresh checkouts running `make bootstrap` (which uses
`pip install -e '.[dev]'`) skip tests/test_phi_alignment_probe.py
via pytest.importorskip("numpy") + pytest.importorskip(
"scipy.sparse.linalg") at module top. Tests show as
collected-but-skipped instead of actively running. Phase 1a
regressions (algorithm drift, KAT fixture corruption,
threshold-band drift) would only surface when an operator
deliberately ran `pip install '.[hessian]'` first.
Following fox's pattern with `[math]` in dev — arborist[math]
pulls sympy (~30 MB) into every fresh dev checkout so CI runs
test_canonical_projection.py + math π* tests by default.
arborist[hessian] adds ~80 MB combined (numpy + scipy) — a real
cost, but numpy/scipy are nearly universal Python deps and
already installed on most modern dev environments.
Verification:
- ``pip install -e '.[dev]' --dry-run`` now resolves numpy>=1.26
+ scipy>=1.11 (previously did not).
- ``make test`` → 1986 passed, 45 skipped (no new failures; no
test count change since I already had the extras locally
installed for #000034 Phase 1a development).
Effect:
- New dev checkout: phi_alignment_probe's 23 tests run by
default (no skip).
- CI catches algorithm drift / KAT corruption / threshold drift
in #000034 Phase 1a code on every push, same as how the
[math] inclusion catches drift in canonical_cache /
canonical_projection tests.
Test/code ratio (per cookbook appendix § "Unit-test density"):
phi_alignment_probe at 419 test LOC / 200 code LOC = 2.10×
puts it firmly in the "contract-defining foundation" bracket
(≥1× threshold fox flagged for substrate-paper-spec'd
primitives). Matches the discipline.
Lands the synthetic-ablation infrastructure proposed in fce8826's
ticket §7 amendment. Same pattern as #000035 Phase 1: ship the
deterministic primitive + unit tests + KAT-pinned fixture on
synthetic inputs ahead of v7 deployment ramp-up, so the
infrastructure is unit-tested + bench-pinned the moment a real
v7 checkpoint becomes available (Phase 1b).
bench/scripts/phi_alignment_probe.py
====================================
Implements ``measure_alignment(W, hessian_eval, *, k_top, k_bot,
epsilon) -> AlignmentReport`` per #000034 §3.1:
- Lanczos top-k + bottom-k via ``scipy.sparse.linalg.eigsh`` over
a user-supplied HVP closure. Probe never materializes H.
- Alignment score: A(W, H) = Σ_j (Σ_i ⟨W·e_i, v_j⟩²) / (λ_j+ε)
/ ‖W‖_F², per ticket §2.1. Computed via W^T @ eigvecs and
squared-column-norms (numerically stable + cheap).
- Verdict thresholds (§3.3): STRUCTURAL_ALIGNMENT (ratio > 1.5) /
NO_ALIGNMENT / ANTI_ALIGNED (ratio < 0.7).
Defect caught + fixed during smoke-testing: the original
"a_uniform" baseline used the mean of a_top + a_bot, which
mechanically over-weights a_bot due to the 1/(λ+ε) term. Fix:
analytical isotropic baseline, derived in 2026-05-10 docstring:
E[A_k(W_uniform, H)] = (1/dim_d) Σ_{j in k-subset} 1/(λ_j+ε)
Under the random-oracle modeling W's columns are isotropic
Gaussians with E[‖W^T v_j‖²/‖W‖_F²] = 1/dim_d, so this is the
expected score for a uniformly-distributed W. Smoke test
post-fix: aligned → STRUCTURAL_ALIGNMENT (ratio ~7.97), uniform →
NO_ALIGNMENT (ratio ~1.00), anti → ANTI_ALIGNED (ratio ~0.00).
All three classes land cleanly in their expected verdict bucket.
Module exports ``PROBE_VERSION = "phi-alignment-v1-lanczos"`` so
future algorithm rotations are detectable at the call site
without string-comparing module paths. Same convention as
#000035's PHI_PRG_VERSION.
bench/fixtures/phi-alignment/synthetic-checkpoints.jsonl
========================================================
30 KAT entries — 10 per class (aligned / uniform / anti) — each
pinning (seed, dim_d, k, class) → expected_verdict + observed_ratio
for regression coverage. Deterministic-seeded so CI replays
exactly. Algorithm change MUST bump PROBE_VERSION + emit a new
fixture file under bench/fixtures/phi-alignment/.
Class ratio ranges:
- aligned: 7.77 - 8.27 (well above 1.5 STRUCTURAL_ALIGNMENT floor)
- uniform: 0.95 - 1.04 (cleanly within NO_ALIGNMENT band)
- anti: 0.00 (well below 0.7 ANTI_ALIGNED ceiling)
tests/test_phi_alignment_probe.py
=================================
14 tests covering #000034 §3.2 + the strict-input-validation surface:
- Determinism (verdict + ratio stable across calls within Lanczos
float tolerance — eigsh uses randomized initial vectors).
- Verdict thresholds (engineered cases land in correct bucket).
- Lanczos convergence (top-k matches dense decomposition on
synthetic diagonal Hessian within 1e-6).
- Module export shape (AlignmentReport JSON-serializable;
PROBE_VERSION + thresholds exported).
- Validation rejects: non-2D W, dim_d mismatch, k_top+k_bot >
dim_d, zero epsilon, zero-norm W, non-square H.
- KAT regression against the 30-entry fixture.
Tests skip via ``pytest.importorskip`` when ``[hessian]`` extras
absent, same fail-soft pattern as the ``[math]``-extras tests
for sympy.
pyproject.toml — new [hessian] optional-deps block
==================================================
Adds ``numpy>=1.26`` + ``scipy>=1.11`` under a new ``[hessian]``
extras gate. Same pattern as ``[math]`` for sympy: kept out of
core deps to keep fresh installs lightweight (~80 MB combined).
Operators install via ``pip install 'arborist[hessian]'``.
#000034 status flip
===================
Ticket §7: "open · awaiting go/no-go" → "in progress · Phase 1a
landed 2026-05-10; Phase 1b parks for v7 deployment ramp-up".
Phase 1b unchanged: closure criterion still requires a real v7
checkpoint measurement that resolves §9.1 of the soft-hash-
channel-analysis. TICKETS.md index row refreshed.
Hygiene
=======
- make test → 1669 passed, 45 skipped (was 1643; +14 anchor_prg
not in suite from Phase 1a, +14 phi_alignment from this
commit — wait, +12 net since some tests were dropped/renamed
in fox's parallel work. Bottom-line: 1669 stable.)
- make chain-check-shards → 0 across all 7 shards.
- arborist.substrate namespace untouched; this lands under
bench/scripts/ since it's a measurement tool, not a substrate
primitive — same dir as phi_alignment_probe's intended siblings.
Two new π* canonicalizers extend the math substrate above
arithmetic@v1 (closed-form rationals) and logic-kernel@v1
(propositional Boolean → CNF):
algebra-symbolic@v1 (Phase 1) — symbolic-algebra domain.
sp.expand → sp.srepr canonical bytes. Polynomial identity collapses
((x+1)**2 ≡ x**2 + 2*x + 1); exponential identity collapses
(exp(a+b) ≡ exp(a)*exp(b), inherited from sp.expand's default
behavior); trigonometric identity does NOT collapse
(sin²+cos² ≢ 1). The trig surface is reserved for a future
algebra-symbolic-simplified@v1 variant that wraps sp.simplify at
unbounded CPU cost. Rejects relationals (`x > 0`) and
BooleanFunction shapes (`x & y`) via `isinstance(expr, sp.Expr)` —
sp.Symbol confusingly inherits from Boolean so the right rejection
filter is "not Expr" rather than "Boolean".
calculus-derivative@v1 (Phase 2) — calculus domain. JSON-shaped
{f, x, n} input → sp.diff → sp.expand → srepr bytes. Output is
itself a valid algebra-symbolic@v1 input so the two compose
naturally under arborist.pi_star.compose. n defaults to 1; bools
explicitly rejected (Python isinstance(True, int) is True so we
filter that explicitly).
Optional dependency: sympy ships in the new [math] extra
(pyproject.toml). Folded into [dev] so make bootstrap pulls it
transitively. An explicit `bootstrap-math` Makefile target documents
the opt-in for minimal-install users. Both modules self-guard
via `try: import sympy as sp / except ImportError: sp = None` and
only register(...) when sympy is present, so a fresh checkout
without [math] still loads arborist.pi_star without raising.
Preflight algebra route lands in
arborist.qa.query._canonical_projection_preflight between the
arithmetic and logic routes. Charset regex (_CANONICAL_ALGEBRA_RE)
allows lowercase letters + math chars; requires at least one
letter (else arithmetic wins); rejects natural-language leading
verbs via _CANONICAL_ALGEBRA_NL_LEAD_RE (4-letter minimum so
single-/two-/three-char identifiers like x, xy, sin, cos, pi
survive while "simplify (...)", "factor x...", "expand (a+b)..."
fall through). PiStarError + KeyError both fall through cleanly
so a sympy-less install just routes everything past algebra.
Bench substrate:
- bench/batteries/base.py PHASE_1_CARRIERS gains "symbolic_algebra"
- bench/fixtures/5s/syntax-algebra-symbolic-v1.jsonl (10 fixtures)
- bench/fixtures/5s/semantics-algebra-symbolic-v1.jsonl (13 fixtures
including the documented trig non-collapse + exp collapse)
- Makefile bench-5s-algebra target → 100% pass
Tests: 18 algebra-symbolic + 38 calculus-derivative unit tests +
~10 new preflight-route tests in test_canonical_projection.py. All
gate on pytest.importorskip("sympy") so a sympy-less suite stays
green. Full suite: 1369 passed / 27 skipped.
Phases 3-7 (integral, limit, series, linear-algebra,
function-sampled) remain open as future work; each lands as its
own ticket when an actual consumer surfaces.
Bench-max sprint 1a + sprint 3 + speed audit. Five wins, none of
them traded calibration.
UTF-16 surrogate fix (sprint 1a)
================================
Hermes occasionally emits text with lone UTF-16 surrogates. Bare
.encode('utf-8') raises UnicodeEncodeError on those, which aborted
the run with no Merkle root. Two errors per lattice mode in the
2026-05-02 bench were this exact path on the 'tell me about the
roman empire' question.
Fix: errors='surrogatepass' on the four sha256 helpers that hash
model-derived text, plus the two audit-chain encode sites in
store.py for defense-in-depth (audit body could carry user text in
some flows). The hash stays deterministic because WTF-8 bytes are
reversible & unique per input.
Touched:
aborist/qa/dag.py:_sha256_hex (the loud one)
aborist/qa/keys.py:_sha256
aborist/qa/evidence.py:_sha256_hex
aborist/store.py: chain_audit_events + append_audit
Predicted Δ on next bench: +1pp on lattice modes (the 2 errors
become valid runs).
Smoke fixture (sprint 3)
========================
bench/qa_questions_smoke.txt — 5 questions, all anchor classes,
each currently failing pointer mode 100% while JSON aces 100% per
the 2026-05-02 bench. Wired as 'make bench-qa-smoke', --n 1
--concurrency 4, ~30-90s wall-clock depending on vLLM warmth. The
inner loop for prompt iteration; the full 71-question sweep stays
the scoreboard.
Smoke verified: pointer=0/5 STRICT, JSON=5/5, quote=2/5. Confirms
the gap pattern from the journal.
Concurrency default
===================
Makefile bench-qa now defaults to BENCH_QA_CONCURRENCY=4 (was
sequential). Override via BENCH_QA_CONCURRENCY=N. Combined with
the --concurrency landing in 0870af6, full sweep drops from ~107
min projected to ~51 min actual.
pytest-xdist (test-speed)
=========================
Added pytest-xdist>=3.5 to dev extras. 'make test' now uses
-n auto (= one worker per logical CPU). Measured: 36s → 10s on
the 641-test suite. 3.6× speedup, no test changes required.
Bench-max scoreboard (predicted lift from this commit alone):
+1pp lattice modes (UTF fix)
+cycle-time enabler (smoke fixture, xdist)
no calibration cost — none of the verifier checks moved.
Lifts the async web fetcher into aborist as an opt-in source. The
implementation comes directly from ~/git/agents.ai.unturf.com/core
(rev 2026-04-28); aborist's adaptations are minimal and documented in
aborist/sources/crawler/__init__.py:
core/async_web_fetcher.py -> aborist/sources/crawler/async_web_fetcher.py
core/web_fetch.py -> aborist/sources/crawler/web_fetch.py
Two source-side changes during the lift:
1. Heavy deps (aiohttp, bs4, miniuri) wrapped in try/except so a bare
`import aborist.sources.crawler` raises ImportError with the install
hint instead of leaking AttributeErrors deep in user code.
2. Chat-bot fetch triggers (`has_fresh_fetch_trigger`,
`has_web_fetch_trigger` from agents.ai.unturf.com/core/keywords)
replaced with NotImplementedError stubs. Aborist has no chat
surface — fetch intent is detected at the application layer. The
two test classes that exercised these triggers are
`@pytest.mark.skip`'d with the same rationale.
Not lifted: web_cache_manager.py — it backs page caching with
SQLAlchemy. Aborist has its own content-addressed cache via
providence_cache; no need to carry SQLAlchemy as a dep just for
crawled-page memoization.
Off by default:
- `[crawler]` extras section in pyproject.toml carries the heavy
deps. `[dev]` pulls them in so the crawler tests can run.
- `make test` ignores tests/crawler/ entirely.
- `make bootstrap-crawler` installs the extras into the venv.
- `make test-crawler` runs only the lifted tests after extras land.
Tests: 74 passed, 9 skipped (the chat-bot trigger tests deliberately
dropped). Default `make test` stays at 273 passed, 1 skipped.
Implements the protocol contract pinned in docs/mesh.md. Each peer
runs a stdlib ThreadingHTTPServer; clients send Ed25519-signed
envelopes carrying one of:
ANNOUNCE_ROOT document_root + source_uri + versions
ANNOUNCE_DERIVATION core_root <- surface_roots (proof-blob hash)
ANNOUNCE_PROVIDENCE cache_key + audit_mode + answer_hash
ANNOUNCE_FALSIFICATION cache_key + reason
REQUEST_BODY/DELIVER_BODY pull-on-miss + Merkle-root verify
WireEnvelope canonicalizes via sorted-key separator-tight JSON; the
canonical bytes are what get signed. Receivers verify the signature
against sender_id's sign_pub looked up in mesh_roster at the
envelope's epoch_id — non-members of that epoch produce no valid
signature, so they're silently rejected (401, no audit event).
Each accepted ANNOUNCE_* writes one 'mesh_received' event into the
local audit chain whose body is the full signed envelope (the
remote's signature stays attached for non-repudiation). The
receiver's chain stays internally consistent because we append in
receive-order.
REQUEST_BODY/DELIVER_BODY: the responder ships the document text
plus per-chunk leaf hashes; the client re-derives the Merkle root
from those leaves and refuses to return any body whose leaves
don't reconstruct the requested root.
Tests: 17 unit (envelope canonicalization, sig verify against
roster, type validation, tampered-body rejection, audit-event
write) + 5 end-to-end (two real HTTP peers on ephemeral ports
exchanging announces and bodies). 22/22 green.
Deferred to later commits, per docs/mesh.md:
- CLI verbs (mesh serve, mesh sync) — pending downstream merge
- per-peer chain-of-claims tracking (catchup, replay, fork detection)
- optional AEAD encryption of message bodies (contract says optional)
Adds aborist/wikitext.py with to_base() — deterministic wikitext →
prose conversion via mwparserfromhell. Drops <ref>...</ref>,
[[File:...]], [[Image:...]], [[Category:...]] entirely; resolves
piped wikilinks to display text; collapses templates, formatting,
and HTML markup. extract_wikilinks() preserves the link graph for
the definition-cloud artifact (recoverable from any page on demand
without re-parsing wikitext at query time).
Wires to_base() into verify_quotes(). Without the strip, the
verifier compared the model's clean prose against [[Cloud Strife]],
[[Shinra Electric Power Company|Shinra]], etc. and falsely flagged
real source quotes as VISUAL. Concrete case from a make-query run:
'Cloud Strife, an unsociable mercenary who claims to be a former
1st Class member of Shinra's SOLDIER unit;' is verbatim in the
Final_Fantasy_VII article wikitext (modulo markup). With the strip
that quote now verifies; the genuine model hallucinations in the
same answer still flag honestly. Side-effect: 43% smaller context
size on average so less LLM token waste.
BASE_VERSION = 'wikitext-base-v1' is the algorithm pin. Bump when
the strip rules change. Soft-imported in verify.py so environments
without mwparserfromhell installed degrade gracefully (no strip,
same behavior as before this commit).
Build:
- pyproject.toml: new [wikitext] extras (mwparserfromhell>=0.6),
pulled in by [dev]
- Makefile: chain-check / chain-check-shards targets — fast
audit-chain integrity probe, counts dangling prev_event_hash
references; 0 = chain intact
Tests:
- tests/test_wikitext.py: 31 tests (rules, idempotence, real-corpus
fixture)
- tests/test_verify.py: 2 regression tests pinning the FF7 flip
(Cloud Strife quote: VISUAL → STRICT after strip; genuine
hallucination: stays VISUAL)
- tests/fixtures/ff7_characters_chunk0.wikitext: real chunk from a
shard, used to validate the strip on actual Wikipedia content
Phase 1 of the federation/gossip layer fox sketched as the natural
extension of v9.8 admissibility's content-addressed identity. Two
peers ingesting the same dump already compute identical document_roots
and identical 8-dim cache_keys; the mesh layer is the wire-and-trust
plumbing that lets them dedup answers, exchange Merkle proofs, and
cleanly distrust an evicted member without a hard fork.
Cryptography (cryptography lib, audited):
Ed25519 — every membership mutation + (future) gossip envelope
is signed by the actor's pubkey.
X25519 ECDH — wraps each epoch's symmetric mesh secret to every
current member's DH pubkey via HKDF-derived AEAD key.
ChaCha20-P1305— AEAD for envelope payloads + per-member secret wrap.
State machine:
mesh_identity — singleton; this peer's keys + group name
mesh_roster — per-epoch (member_id, sign_pub, dh_pub, role)
mesh_epochs — epoch_id -> {started_at, started_event_hash,
secret_envelope JSON, reason}
meta:mesh.enabled flag — off by default; gates everything
Eviction works by rotating to a new epoch whose envelope omits the
kicked member. Their prior signatures stay verifiable (the older
roster row is retained), but any gossip from epoch+1 onward is
opaque to them — the secret was never shared with their pubkey.
Authority gate: only roster members with role='admin' can add or
kick. Self-kick is rejected explicitly. The last admin can't be
kicked. Schedule-rotate (refresh secret, no roster change) is open
to any current member as a session-hygiene op.
Audit-chain integration: every mesh state mutation writes an audit
event (mesh_init, mesh_enable/disable, mesh_epoch_rotate). The
epoch's started_event_hash backfills into mesh_epochs after the
audit row commits, giving each epoch a tamper-evident pin into the
ledger.
CLI subcommands: mesh init, mesh status, mesh enable, mesh disable,
mesh members, mesh add, mesh kick, mesh rotate. All read-only or
local-state-only — no network code paths in this commit.
The HTTP gossip wire (`mesh sync`, `mesh serve`) is the next phase.
Schema, cryptography, and roster state machine are all in place to
support it without further migration.
Three cheats stack to drop on-disk store from ~21 KB to ~6.7 KB per doc on
the 2003 enwiki cur corpus (-67% measured, apples-to-apples reingest with
identical document/edge counts; Merkle proofs round-trip 30/30):
1. zstd-compressed chunks.content (level 3). Magic-byte detection on read
means legacy plaintext rows pass through unchanged. Cores stay plaintext
so qa.query._docs_with_core_keyword_match's SQL LOWER+LIKE keeps working.
2. edges WITHOUT ROWID. The composite PK (src_root, edge_type, dst_root,
dst_uri, anchor) covers every column, so a default rowid-based table
near-doubles row data in the PK index. WITHOUT ROWID makes the table
itself the B-tree. Drops idx_edges_dst_uri too — the only query that
filters on dst_uri alone is gravity_top_inbound, a one-shot analytic.
3. contentless FTS5 (content='', contentless_delete=1) eliminates the
28 MB / 1000 docs of duplicated chunk text the old chunks_fts stored.
chunks gets an explicit chunk_id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY so the FTS5
rowid maps back to chunks.chunk_id at search time. Snippets are
built in Python (search/fts5.py:_build_snippet) since SQL snippet()
returns empty in contentless mode.
TF-IDF retrieval also fixed: the prior LIKE '%intel%' substring match
let "intelligence", "intellectual", "intellivision" drown real hits like
Pentium_4 (whose TF-IDF core has "intel" as an exact keyword). Now uses
word-boundary `LIKE '%, intel, %'` patterns plus a match_count over the
distinct query tokens — multi-token coverage outranks single-token title
boosts. Pentium_4 surfaces #1 for "what is the fastest intel CPU?" with
the canonical 2003 answer (Pentium 4 3.20 GHz) instead of an empty
"insufficient sources" reply.
Schema-level changes affect new DBs only; existing v9.8 DBs keep
working at the old layout. Cross-shard UNION views explicitly list the
intersection of columns so a mixed cluster (legacy + new schema shards
in one --shards-dir) still unions cleanly.
aborist/qa/ implements the cache-first answer flow from the providence
whitepaper, scaled up to v9.8's full 8-dim admissibility invariant.
cache_key = SHA-256 of:
source_root | question_hash | model_profile_hash | conversation_hash
| governance_policy_hash | schema_version | canonicalization_version
| chunking_version
Any drift in any dimension yields a distinct cache_key — prior records
cannot serve. Falsification states (failed/stale/quarantined) gate
every cache hit.
- qa/keys.py — pure hash functions, deterministic & testable
- qa/client.py — ChatClient Protocol + StubClient + OpenAI-compatible
HTTP client (vllm/llama.cpp/uncloseai compatible)
- qa/runner.py — ask(): lookup -> hit (no LLM call, hit_count++)
OR miss (call client, write record, audit event,
proof binds answer to source root)
- cli.py — `aborist ask` and `aborist providence` subcommands
- pyproject.toml — httpx promoted from extras to core (used by both
html and qa); selectolax stays in [html] extras
Smoke (StubClient, no network): cache miss writes record with chunk_0
Merkle proof reconstructing source_root; cache hit returns same record
without calling client; 1085 audit events chained 0 breaks across
ingest/derive/evict/rehydrate/providence_write.
